Tuition refers to a form of extra coaching for particular field that requires the seeker to pay a sum of fee. In fact, tuition is a popular culture among Malaysians. Tuition comes in various types – private tuition, home tuition, personal tuition, small group tuition and also one-on-one tuition.
In Malaysia, tuition culture has become a significant education platform for most school children to gain knowledge and enables them to perform better in school. Tuition centres are available everywhere especially in urban areas. Where there’s resident, at least one tuition centre is located in that particular vicinity.
In today’s modern world, personal tutors also provide tutoring services. It ensures that students receive attention all the time as in large classes, tutors are unable to analyze one-on-one student effectively.
According to a survey conducted randomly in Malaysia, at least 90 percent of students received tuition when they are in upper secondary school. Even in local newspapers, some said that Malaysian students spend an equal amount of time or even too much time in tuition centres.
Decades ago, students only spend their time learning from school. However, most commented that tuition dominates our lives today. For some, tuition is essential to perform better in school while those who operates tuition centre perceives it as a serious business.
Tuition centre serves as an education service provider to assist what the teachers in the school failed to complete. In short, it is only essential when students failed to catch up in certain subjects and required personal attention from personal tutor. Tuition in Malaysia is provided by tuition centres, academies and training centres all with a single purpose in mind – to earn profits using their knowledge.
Apart from commercialized tuition centres, students can also hire personal tutors but they of course, have to fork out extra. Back then, students only seek tuition when they are unable to keep pace with school lessons. But bear in mind, one main motive that encourages majority of students seek tuition is today’s education system. Since today’s education is exam-oriented, thus large proportion of students aims to excel in exam.
Since 2000, Malaysia has recorded over 2000 registered tuition centres nationwide. That figures exclude centres that are operating illegally without license. Urban families do not hesitate to invest hundreds per month solely for their child’s education.
